After a difficult start to the season, the Kendal players were upbeat and gathered together before travelling to Cockermouth. The team had trained hard during the week and were keen to put in an improved performance against Keswick. After travelling through heavy rain on route to Cockermouth, the weather had thankfully cleared before the match started.

Despite having no substitutes, it was clear from the pushback that Kendal were up for the fight and that the team had shrugged off the previous week’s game. After a period of pressure from Keswick, Sophie Strong in the Kendal goal pulled off several great saves to keep the team in the match. Eventually Keswick broke through the Kendal midfield and after a pass up the pitch they scored.

Throughout the first half Kendal continued to push for an equaliser but couldn’t break through. After a strong tackling display by Heather Randell and Francine Bult, Kendal held out for much of the first half without conceding. The Keswick pressure finally paid off as they scored a further 3 goals in quick succession.

The first half ended at 4 – 0 to Keswick.

Kendal started the second half strongly and their pressing game forced errors by Keswick. Kendal almost pulled a goal back, when the ball was quickly released from the defence up to Ruby Robinson in the centre of midfield. She threaded a long lifted pass through the Keswick midfield to Hannah Cartwright who was leading the Kendal line. Cartwright beat the Keswick defence and released a low shot to the right of the goalkeeper and the ball unfortunately hit the post.

Despite a further Keswick goal (4 – 0), Kendal continued to search for a way back, but as the game became stretched the team of 11 began to tire. There were some excellent second half performances from Kendal, including Ruby Robinson and Hannah Cartwright who linked up well to keep stretching the Keswick defence. Towards the end of the game the Keswick substitutes made a difference and Kendal conceded a further 3 goals.

Final score: Keswick Ladies 2s 8 – 0 Kendal Ladies 2s.

Kendal will go again next week with a home game against Kirkby Lonsdale Ladies.
