Kendal 1st Team were excited to take to the pitch on Saturday for their first ever game in the Investec Conference North against Whitley Bay. Kendal entered the game as the underdog and did not know what to expect from the away side. Kendal started strong and managed to pack Whitley Bay into their own half of the pitch and even created several goal scoring opportunities but were denied due to tight Whitley Bay defensive work. Whitley Bay fought back well creating a few chances of their own. The Kendal defence had their work cut out and after battling hard to make saves and clear the ball Whitley Bay scored off a short corner putting them in the lead. Kendal remained positive and it paid off – 3 minutes later Rosie Dale sent the ball screaming past the Whitley Bay keeper after being awarded a short corner. During the first half of the game, Kendal proved an even match for the Whitley Bay team leaving the pitch with the score at 1-1.
The battle continued in the second half with end-to-end hockey and lots of chances for both sides. Whitley Bay took the lead for a second time but again Kendal responded with an equalising goal from Nicola Conway. The tension continued with both teams fighting hard. During the last 10 minutes play became sloppy as the players tired resulting in cards for both teams. The Kendal side were reduced to only 9 players on the pitch and with only 5 minutes left on the clock Whitley Bay took advantage of the situation and scored a third goal to end the match as 3-2 winners.
Despite not picking up any points, Kendal played well and can enter their next match feeling positive and confident. The team will travel down to Nottingham on Saturday 21st September to take on Boots.
