Kendal welcomed Ormskirk to The Queen Katherine school this weekend. After several mixed performances where Kendal struggled to convert enough chances to gain league points, The Greens were keen to improve.
Kendal were chomping at the bit when the first whistle blew and took the game to Ormskirk from the off. Pinning the visitors back into their own half it seemed as though it would only be a matter of time before the deadlock was broken. James Marston opened the scoring when he spun onto a loose ball in the Ormskirk D and finished with a reverse stick swipe from close range. A second followed soon after when a great team move eventually led to Phil Conlin driving forward from midfield. Conlin played a defence splitting one-two with Steven Olliver and then found Tom Taggart on the back post for a tap-in that gave the keeper no chance to make the save. A third goal came not long before half time. Nick Davis found himself with the ball in shooting distance, but once again the percentage ball was played to find Alex Hyman for another tap-in to frustrate the visiting keeper.
Half time- Kendal 3 – 0 Ormskirk.
Ormskirk came out fighting in the second half and for a time the game ebbed and flowed with space all over the pitch. The Green’s defence held strong though as Liam Platt took to his first game at left-back like a duck to water and Simon Millington plucked every aerial that came near him out of the air with ease. Rob Cartwright showed his class when he reacted twice in quick succession to thwart the Ormskirk strikers and keep his clean sheet intact. Before long the Kendal midfield asserted their dominance once again. It was death by a thousand passes for the visitors as Mark Addison, Phil Conlin, Aaron Screen and man of the match Ayrton Boyd slowly stifled their opposite numbers. Aaron Screen got his captains goal when his strike from the top of the D squeezed through the keepers legs and thundered into the backboard. The Match ended with Kendal earning themselves a penalty corner. A well worked move ended with Matt Marston materialising seemingly from nowhere to emphatically put the ball over the line from close range with the final touch of the game.
Final score- Kendal Men’s 1s 5 – 0 Ormskirk Men’s 1s.
