Kendal made the long trip over to Wakefield for a bottom of the table clash and a game from which both teams really needed the 3 points.
The first half saw Kendal playing like the proverbial nest of rabbits in headlights. With the pressure of the situation severely affecting the Kendal team, Wakefield dominated and went into half time 3 goals the better. Some firm but motivational words during the half time break, plus a little tlc for Katie Ireland’s bleeding nose, meant that the second half was a different story.
Kendal came out from the break looking really strong and defending well from the front with a good press to prevent Wakefield from clearing their lines. Some dynamic attacking from the Kendal forwards, against a packed Wakefield defence, produced a throng of short corners. When the ball was illegally knee’d off the line by the post player, the resultant penalty flick was nervously put away by Vicky Whalley-Jones and Kendal were finally on the score sheet. The second half continued with some heroic defending at the back, with players putting bodies on the line to deny the Wakefield team any shots. Unfortunately, both Mel Whalley-Jones and Leah Mitchell were a tad too literal with this tactic and ended up with a brief sit down alongside the TD. Despite attack after attack, Kendal were unable to convert any further chances, leaving the game as a 3-1 loss and the team slipping to the very bottom of the table.
The return fixture against Wakefield in a couple of weeks’ time is lining up to be a feisty affair. Saturday 14th April, 11am at QES…be there!
