Back on home turf this Saturday, Kendal Ladies first team were hoping their luck on the new pitch would continue as they faced City of York firsts.
Although Kendal started with the ball, they quickly lost it and felt under pressure. Once they had regained possession they then fought to squeeze themselves out of the little space they found themselves in within their own 23. Once out of Kendal’s half, the game was transformed and the pressure was quickly applied to the visitors, who conceded a penalty corner within the 16th minute. After some controversy, Nicola Hartley found herself having to move wide to receive the injection at the top of the D, she played it in to her teammates before receiving it back to carefully place it past the York keeper.
Despite much of the play, The Greens were unable to extend their lead in the remainder of the first half, but they exploded after the half time break and within six minutes of the re-start, youngster Zoe Dempsey slotted another (her second of the season) past the York goal keeper. It was only another three minutes later that a savage tackle from a York defender on Celia Powell initiated the umpire to award the greens with a penalty stroke. Experienced penalty-taker Vicky Whalley-Jones stepped up to the spot and with such composure, she sent the ball flying past the keeper into the back of the net to secure Kendal’s 3-0 win and 3 valuable points. Kendal ladies firsts travel away to Altrincham to face Bowdon 2s this weekend.
