On the drier side of the Pennines, Kendal ladies 1s faced Wakefield 2s on their home blue Olympic turf.
The visitors started well and were applying all of the pressure with a quick one and two touch passing game. It was an unwelcome surprise when Wakefield broke the Kendal back line and opened the scoring in the eleventh minute. It took a further ten minutes before Kendal were able to get level thanks to a drag flick positioned between the Wakefield keeper’s head and the crossbar by Rebecca Wilson. Unfortunately the Cumbrians were unable to sustain their earlier pressure and Wakefield capitalised on this, setting their forward up for a hatrick before the half-time whistle.
Keen to claw back some of the difference, Kendal restarted with determination, but were unable to regain any of the former glory from the start of the match, and the score line widened with Wakefield adding another two. Vicky Whalley-Jones contributed to Kendal’s tally through one of her clean penalty corner strikes which drilled straight past the keeper into the back of the net in the 63rd minute. But this did little to alter Wakefield’s game as they concentrated on their attack and added a final goal to their tally before the seventy minutes were up.
Kendal face Brooklands Poynton 2s at home next Saturday, and this rearranged fixture is the last of their season.
