Following a heavy downpour earlier in the afternoon, the clouds parted and the sun shone down as the Kendal Ladies 2’s took to the pitch for their game against Keswick Ladies 1’s.
Soon after the starting whistle blew, Keswick quickly gained possession of the ball and put pressure on the Kendal defence. Jess Fox, Gaby Ansell, Ruby Robinson and the supporting midfield tried their best to clear the ball from the D, however it wasn’t long until Keswick managed to score their first goal. The opposition continued to go from strength to strength, earning themselves a number of attacking short corners and opportunities for shots on goal that the Kendal side struggled to defend.
A change in positions saw Sophie Strong move into right defence and Ruby Robinson to left midfield. The team kept their perseverance and looked to pass the ball to the midfield players on the wing. Kirstyn Fox in right midfield worked well with debutant Maya Walling who drove the ball up the wing with the support of Laura Braithwaite in the centre, also a debutant to the 2’s team. Unfortunately the attack upon Keswick’s defence was short lived as they quickly cleared the ball from their D, managing to hit their forwards at pace.
At half time, the team regrouped to discuss how they could try to regain ball possession for the remainder of the game, as well as how the greens could try to push the opposition players to the sidelines of the pitch, therefore protecting the central channel. This proved advantageous as the second half of the game saw centre forward Libby Townley supported by Jess Fox working well together to drive up the pitch and put pressure on Keswick’s defence. Unfortunately the team struggled to maintain possession as Keswick fought well to rid the ball from their D as their attackers quickly moved the ball down pitch earning themselves an impressive goal.
A valiant effort from the young Kendal side, however Keswick who passed the ball around their team well and carried the ball at speed deservedly won the game leaving the final result at Kendal Ladies 2’s 0 – 19 Keswick Ladies 1’s. Libby Townley was awarded player of the match. A special mention must also go to Kirstyn Fox after she (literally) lay her body on the line, not once, but several times to prevent further goals from crossing the goal line.
