The 2s travelled to Carlisle to take on their 2s in the cup. The first challenge of the day was for both captains to work out how much of an issue the unusual appearance of the sun was going to have on the keepers.
The game started at the same tempo as the previous week with both teams having good possession and attacks. The Kendal defence, with young keeper Sophie Willan in goal, saw off a lot of the Carlisle chances but unfortunately some spectacular goals from Carlisle towards the end of the first half saw them go into the break 3-0 up.
The second half started in the same positive manner the 2s have started the season with and a number of chances were made on the Carlisle goal, but the keeper and the post kept Kendal from scoring. The midfield of Sophie Stead, Emma Reid, Sarah Harper, Hannah Cartwright and Sophie Strong ensured the pressure was kept on for the forwards to have the chances for much of the game. Carlisle had breaks as well and found the goal again to go 5-0 up but Sophie Willan stopped it from being a lot more.
Late in the half Laurel Martin picked up the ball on the half way line and made a great run into the D to score a consolation goal for Kendal.
Final score 5-1 but it doesn’t reflect the effort put in by the team which was not only noted by the travelling Kendal supporters (thank you for coming!), but also the Carlisle captain and umpires who commented at the end of the match what a great game it had been and how well the team had improved from last season.
Back to the league next week with the new Wigton 2s team travelling to Kendal.
