The merry band that made up this weeks Mintcakes assembled early….like REALLY REALLY early… even Boyd…on Sunday morning before heading south to engage Stockport Bramhall on the field of green in the England Hockey Mixed Tier 1 Championships.
Kendal started brightly and appeared to be the stronger team overall. Unfortunately, this was not reflected with a score despite Ewan Galloway’s numerous incursions into their D. The opposition had less attempts… but somehow found the net first to take a 1-0 lead into half time. Underterred, unbowed and invigorated by Captain Chris Woodman’s halftime motivational speech – “score more, conceed less” – the second half continued in much the same vein. The greatly deserved score for the visitors came from the cool, collected, Penalty Corner swagger of Mel Whalley-Jones squaring the game.
A petulant teddy throw from the home side’s first flick taker was not enough to deter Katie Ireland or Andy Melville from scoring theirs and certainly never put the mighty Rob Cartwright off his player of the match winning stride, as he swatted away Stockport’s attempts a la King Kong on the Empire State Building. Some creative accounting meant Kendal came out with the result and progress in the competition to the 4th round on Sunday 25th March!…may the odds be ever in their favour.
Stockport Bramhall Mixed 1(1) – (2)1 Kendal Mintcakes (after penalty flicks).
