Kendal 1s travelled to Whitley Bay on Saturday the 24th of February knowing they faced a well-drilled team at the top end of the table.

The beast of the east was raging strong, creating a chill in the air and there were skins a plenty (apart from Lauren who had no clue what was going on). Whitley Bay had much of the possession from the start, distributed the ball well and attacked in numbers to win a penalty corner in the first few minutes of the game. Unable to open the scoring on the first attempt they earnt a second corner and a slick drag flicked rattled past the Kendal defence into the goal. Kendal struggled to organise their defensive set up and it was only another few minutes before Whitley Bay made it 2-0. Kendal then began to get some control of the game, especially after some commanding words from Team Manager Sam Weeks (#samformanager2018/19). Kendal’s linking play improved and they were able to retain possession in the midfield and send some lovely balls through to the forward unit of Hannah Cartwright, Lauren Coward, Molly Thwaites and young Yaz Taylor. Play was more balanced for the rest of the first half, however it was Whitley Bay who snuck another on the scoreboard before the half time break.

Kendal entered the 2nd half on a high after a determined team talk from Vickylouise Whalley-Jones. Possessing a real desire to take control of the game, Kendal’s defence played tightly and even though Whitley Bay managed to penetrate Kendal’s D, they couldn’t beat goalkeeper Laurel Halliwell who made some outstanding saves from all angles. Kendal felt the table beginning to turn, and worked themselves into a more attacking position. Midfielders Abbie Barnes, Karen Tyson and Vickylouise Whalley-Jones made some excellent play to feed the forwards but it was not meant to be, Kendal couldn’t put one away. Kendal then lost Rebecca Delbridge due to a poorly timed tackle, which was shortly followed up by Ailsa Wright who refused to be outdone. Kendal’s defending line was thrown into chaos and Whitley Bay capitalised in the closing minutes of the game.

Final score- Whitley Bay & Tynemouth 1s 4 – 0 Kendal Ladies 1s.
